  1. Louis Lex, Jr. collection

    Contains a black-and-white photographic print of a pile of corpses in the newly-liberated Dachau concentration camp, kept in an envelope from Rays Photo Service, La Crosse, Wisconsin; no inscription on verso. The image was part of a series taken by the Yugoslav Prisoner Committee and widely distributed to American soldiers; dated May 4, 1945. Acquired by Private Louis Lex, Jr. (donor’s father) who served in the US Army during WWII as a member of the 66th Black Panther Division, 264th Regiment, 3rd Battalion, Company L.

  3. Max Eichhorn collection

    The Max Eichhorn papers include correspondence, photographs, subject files, and writings documenting Eichhorn’s World War II service as a Jewish chaplain. Eichhorn was one of the first Jewish chaplains to enter the Dachau concentration camp after liberation, and he led the first religious service in the camp. Correspondence includes letters between Max Eichhorn, his family, the families of servicemen, military authorities, and American Jewish organizations during World War II.   4. Bierzonski family papers

    The Bierzonski family papers consist of documents and photographs relating to Viktor, Bronia, and Gerda’s attempts to immigrate to the United States and Cuba and Bronia and Gerda’s time in hiding. Included in the collection is a German Fremdenpass for Viktor, a diary kept by Gerda while attending a Jewish boarding school in Switzerland in 1944, immigration papers relating to the family’s attempts to flee Germany, and pre-war and wartime photographs of the Bierzonski and Lefkowitz families.   5. George Junior Groce photograph collection

    Contains an envelope with photographs strung together. Photographs show the reburial of victims of the Mauthausen concentration camp and its subcamp Gusen, in Austria, shortly after liberation. Included are images of civilians [Austrians living near the camp] burying the victims; images of the deceased in piles at the camps; and burning of infested barracks.

  7. Bigler H. Mumma photograph collection

    Collection of thirteen photographs documenting the Nordhausen concentration camp immediately following liberation, taken by Bigler H. Mumma (donor's uncle) who served in a medical battalion with the US Army during WWII and was part of the liberation forces at Nordhausen. Images show hundreds of corpses of prisoners laid out next to partially-destroyed buildings.

  9. Francis Robert Arzt photograph collection

    Contains approximately twenty photographs and copy prints of the Dachau concentration camp in the weeks after liberation, including various views of the camp complex, images of recovering prisoners in their barracks, and U.S. Army physicians conducting typhus tests.

  10. Rudy Baum photograph collection

    The collection contains four photographs taken after Buchenwald's liberation in April 1945 that show American soldiers, survivors, and German civilians. All photos are stamped on verso with the name, address, and phone number of the donor as well as notes written in English that detail what is being depicted in each photograph. Includes images of victim bodies, German civiliians gathered around what is noted on verso to be a human skin lamp, and the gallows.

    Consists of one Deutsche Arbeitsfront booklet, which was issued to Karl Röder in Koblenz, Germany, in 1938. The booklet notes his administrative post as Altenkirchen 02. Aside from the identification information and printed text, the booklet is almost entirely blank.
