    The collection consists of the personal papers of Aladár Szegedy-Maszák, a high ranking Hungarian diplomat and foreign ministry official during the Holocaust era. Includes correspondence and memoirs relevant to the Second World War and its immediate aftermath, with special emphasis on Hungary’s role, its efforts to leave the war and to avoid Soviet occupation. The collection also contains biographical information on Aladár, family correspondence, subject files, copies of his Voice of America commentaries, and phonographs.

  4. Imre Gross memoir

    Memoir, typescript, 129 page, written by Imre Gross (Emery Robert), describing his childhood and youth in Hungary, his conscription into a forced labor battalion between 1942-1944, his imprisonment by the Arrow Cross and subsequent escape and hiding in Budapest, liberation, and return to his hometown in 1945. Also described are his experiences in the immediate postwar years, including reunion with his father and sister, university studies, and emigration from Hungary in 1946, life as a displaced person in Germany for three years, and immigration to the United States in 1949.

    Photograph taken by Venant Hanzelka of his wife Stepanka and daughter Hana, dated 1942 near Svojanov, Czechoslovakia. Venant Hanzelka took the photograph while he was visiting Stepanka and Hana, who fled to a mill in a forest after they became endangered by the resistance activities of Venant and his brother Alfons. Alfons was arrested and deported to Auschwitz, where he perished. While staying at the mill, Venant visted his family, and was reunited with them after the war.
