  2. Jews in Budapest during the German occupation, Autumn 1944

    A film by József Herczog. As an amateur filmmaker, Herczog filmed the streets of Budapest during the German occupation of Hungary in autumn 1944 and captured a record of his salon business, the dedication of the bomb shelter in cellar of the “yellow star house” where he lived and over 50% of the tenants were Jewish, Hungarian soldiers, an evacuation, and bomb damage.     RKO-Pathe News. Titles read: "HAVEN - QUAKERS ESTABLISH NY REFUGEE FARM". At West Park American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), several shots of Austrian and German refugees of various ages sitting on steps and chairs outside a building and learning about the American way of life in 'Americanization Classes'. Adults and children work together in picking fruit and vegetables in fields on the Quaker camp. Commentator says the program is designed to re-establish the refugees socially and spiritually.     At the Kiamichi Mountain Christian Mission in Nashoba, Oklahoma, where Harold Dunson and his family were sent as missionaries in 1947. Screen image is mostly decomposition, but behind the emulsion loss and water damage there is an intermittent image of a group of adults in black robes- seems to be a church choir.     Various shots inside the courtroom in Jerusalem, where a tape-recorder is being played. This is playing back the confession of the Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann. Shots of Eichmann, the judges, etc. Note: The confession is heard in German and then translated by the voice-over. He downplays his role in the Holocaust but admits his guilt and offers to be hanged in public as a deterrent to others. He had fled from Germany to Argentina after the war.

  16. Green knapsack used by a Hungarian Jewish man in forced labor

    Large, two pocket rucksack used by Elek Brust while a forced laborer from 1941 and 1943-1944 in Hungary. He then used it while living in hiding with his family during the German occupation through February 1945. Elek was a manufacturer and prominent member of the Jewish community in Budapest where he lived with his wife Lilly and young daughter Eva. In 1941, Jewish males were required to do forced labor service and Elek was sent to a labor camp. Lilly obtained his release a few months later with black market papers.     Archives of Moussa and Odette Abadi, two unknown Jews, who created the Réseau Marcel (Marcel network) in Nice, France to save children during World War II. They saved 527 children from deportation with the cooperation of the local authorities, the Catholic Church (Monsignor Rémond), and many humanitarian organizations. The Réseau Marcel was one of the most successful Jewish rescue networks in Vichy France. Odette Rosenstock was a French doctor, she survived Auschwitz-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen, and Moussa Abadi, Syrian-born was a co-conspirator, whom she married after the war.

Included are letters written by Hermann and Gertrud Jonas Moos in Lippstadt, Germany to their daughter [donor's mother] Hannelore, who was able to immigrate to San Francisco, California in 1938.
