    The collection documents the Holocaust era experiences of the Hafftka family of Częstochowa, Poland and the Jonisch family of Żarki, Poland. Included are photographs of Ola Hafftka (née Jonsich), her husband Aleksander Hafftka, and their daughter Sylvia Hafftka (now Sylvia Smoller), along with other family members. Also included are photographs of the Hie Maru, the ship that Ola, Aleksander, and Sylvia sailed on from Kobe, Japan to Seattle, Washington in 1941 after obtaining Japanese visas from Chiune Sugihara. Additionally, there is an identification card of Ola’s from Warsaw, Poland.

    Correspondence and documents of Hilde and Rudy Miller and their lawyer Hans Strauss concerning reparations for materials and business dispossessed of them for being Jewish. Correspondence discusses, in particular, Rudy’s loss of business after the Nazis instigated a boycott on Jewish businesses and forced the Millers, who did not know each other, to flee. Both Rudy (born Windmueller) and Hilde (born Mueller) had to flee and leave behind their immediate families who did not survive. Includes two postcards, one written to George "Hansi" (donor's husband).

    The collection consists of artifacts, correspondence, documents, and a photograph album relating to the experiences of Jerzy and Nadzieja Klein, their daughter, Joanna, (from 1946, George, Nadine, and Joan Kent) and their family and friends in Warsaw, Poland, before and during the Holocaust and their immigration to and postwar life in the United States.

  17. Riemer family collection

    Consists of letters written by members of the Riemer family of Berlin, Germany. Includes a series of letters in the late 1920s from Werner Riemer in Berlin to his cousin, Lucille Riemer, who had immigrated to the United States. Also includes letters from 1938 from the Riemer family, who had immigrated to Tel Aviv and were seeking help for Werner, who was stuck in Germany and too old to join them on a family visa. Also includes a pre-war essay on the book of Esther written by 8-year-old Melvin Riemer.
