  1. Sam Rafel visits his hometown of Gombin in 1937

    1937 trip to Gombin, Poland (123 km northwest of Warsaw) filmed by Sam Rafel at the request of Nathan Zolna Solomon, who had emigrated from Gombin to Newark NJ and provided Sam Rafel with the camera. The first shot is a grainy, dark interior shot of a crowd of people. This might be the crowd that assembled for Sam Rafel's 1937 visit. He wrote, "the affair took place in the Firemen's Hall, in the presence of three thousand people, virtually the whole Jewish population of Gombin."     Consists of documents related to the Holocaust experiences of Ilona Penner Blech, originally of Berlin, Germany, who participated in a Kindertransport to England in 1939.   6. "Crying is forbidden here" Rachela Olewski testimony

    Consists of a copy of the testimony and experiences of Rachela Zelmanowicz Olewski, originally of Be̜dzin, Poland, entitled "Crying is forbidden here." Born in 1921, Rachela was deported to Auschwitz from the Be̜dzin ghetto in 1943. In Auschwitz, she was a member of the women's orchestra as a mandolin player, and was liberated from Bergen-Belsen in 1945. Rachela immigrated to Israel where she lived until her death in 1987.

  7. Max Burin collection

    Consists of two official certificates presented to Max Burin, originally of Recklinghausen, Germany: one is presented in May 1933, by the Preussischer Landes-Krieger Verband; and one one is presented in February 1935, by the Polizei-Prasident der Recklinghausen. The certificates attest to Max Burin's participation as a soldier in World War I. Also includes a certificate presented March 6, 1936 by the Chevra Kadischah of the Recklinghausen Jewish community, wishing Max Burin luck on his upcoming immigration to Palestine and making him, as the fomer chairman of the group, an honorary member. ...

  8. "17 Rue Saint Fiacre" documentary

    Consists of one documentary, entitled "17 Rue Saint Fiacre," by Daniel Meyers. The documentary tells the story of Leon and Rachel Malmed, who were hidden in Compiegne, France, by the Ribouleau family. The DVD includes personal interviews and family photographs of the Malmed and Ribouleau families, as well as a reunion between Leon and Rachel and the Ribouleaus. Yad Vashem has named the Ribouleaus "Righteous Among the Nations."

  9. "Mom's story, dad remembers"

    Consists of a videocassette entitled "Mom's story, dad remembers," by Victor Friedmann. On the video, Mr. Friedmann tells the story of his parents, Otto and Lenka Friedmann, and their experiences during the Holocaust, including their successful attempts to evade the Nazis by escaping from Zagreb to Split, Yugoslavia (Lenka's hometown), then to Italy, and finally to the United States. The video also includes family photographs.

  10. Robert Berg videocassettes

    Consists of two videocassettes related to the Holocaust experiences of Robert Berg. The first, entitled "Poland, May 1995" includes a visit to Mr. Berg's hometown of Adamov, Poland, and the commemorative ceremonies for the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Mauthausen concentration camp. The second videocassette, entitled "Adamov, Poland Remembered," includes footage of the restoration of the Jewish cemetery and dedication of the memorial monument in Adamov, Poland in 2002.

  11. Werner Gumprecht letter

    The 16-page, typewritten letter was written by Werner Gumprecht in Seville, Spain, and details the beginning of his family's experiences during their immigration from Hamburg, Germany, to the United States in 1941. The Gumprechts left Germany on July 21, 1941, and arrived in N.Y. on September 12, 1941. Their relatives who remained in Germany were deported between October and December 1941 and never heard from again.

    Mishna entrusted to siblings Otto and Greta Schneck by their parents Regina and Sisman Schneck upon the children's emigration to the United States from Vienna, Austria, in 1937. Sisman and Regina were unable to leave Europe and died in the Holocaust. A Mishna is the oral redaction of Jewish law and Rabbinical discussions composed under the direction of Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi around 200 CE.

  13. Julia Pirotte testimony regarding Kielce

    Consists of a five page excerpt from the oral history of Julia Pirotte regarding her memories of the 1946 pogrom in Kielce, Poland. Ms. Pirotte went to Kielce as a journalist and photographer and describes the photographs she took of the violence.

  14. Bergen-Belsen liberation photographs

    Consists of seven photographs taken upon the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The photographs depict corpses laid out in preparation for burial, as well as one photograph of the camp commandant, Josef Kramer.

    Consists of the records of the Perl Gologorer Benevolent Society, formed in 1938 for the promotion of the social discourse among the members, as well as to assist the inhabitants of Gologorer, Poland. Includes account books, membership dues account books, membership correspondence, miscellaneous receipts, a copy of a cemetery deed, minutes of meetings, a certificate of incorporation, a copy of a certificate of incorporation, and a constitution.

  16. Woebbelin/Dillenberg photographs

    Consists of 130 photographs taken upon the liberation of the Woebbelin concentration camp; photographs of the citizens of Ludwigslust, Germany, burying the victims of Woebbelin and participating in a funeral ceremony; and photographs of survivors in the Dillenberg, Germany, displaced persons camp.

    Consists of one spiral bound album presented to Louis Margel from the "War Prisoner's Aid of the Y.M.C.A." The album contains photographs of the liberation of the Spittal, Austria, prisoner of war camp (Stalag XVIII) and of life in the Spittal displaced persons camp.

    Consists of photographs and photographic negatives, taken upon the liberation of the Ohrdruf concentration camp. Also contains correspondence from American soldier Benjamin Finesmith asking family and friends to send care packages to the displaced persons in the Bindermichl displaced persons camp.
