  1. Papers of Heinz Werner Löwenstein

The collection comprises two separate deposits from the family Löwenstein in 1988. The first (643/1/1) consists of correspondence between Heinz Werner Löwenstein and his parents, 1935-1940. The letters provide an interesting account of the difficulties encountered by a young immigrant trying to make his way in South Africa as well as of the life led by Jewish people in pre-war Berlin. For obvious reasons the letters make hardly any reference to the political situation and the real hardships and dangers of the parents' lives are hidden. The second deposit consists of correspondence from Hein...

The author was Hauptmann der Schutzpolizei, Meurin. The document is countersigned by Oberwachtmeister der Sch[utzpolizei?] [illegible]. Whilst the addressee is not explicit, the tenor of the report and the list of recommendations for future transports in the penultimate section suggest that it was written for the attention of the Gestapo, Düsseldorf, ie the organisation responsible for deporting the city's Jews. This storage record book of Thomas Cook's Lisbon depot, is thought to be significant because it apparently contains the names of many Jews who left possessions during the years 1942-1943, much of which remained unclaimed, and was presumably disposed of by Thomas Cook staff in due course.
