Malka O. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Malka O., who was born in Poland in 1925, the youngest of four children. She recounts her father emigrating to Argentina in 1930; her brother's enlistment in the Polish military in 1938; German invasion in 1939; her sister's emigration to Argentina; hiding with a group of people one night during a round-up; finding her mother gone when she returned; staying with her brother-in-law's friends; leaving after an attack by Poles; her brother-in-law returning months later; living with him and his uncle; round-up for slave labor in a factory in Staszów; ghettoization; separation from her brother-in-law; deportation to Ravensbrück; slave labor in a factory; evacuation on Swedish buses to Copenhagen, Denmark in April 1945; contacting her father in Argentina; and emigrating to join him in early 1946. Ms. O. notes never learning what happened to her mother and brother; her sense of being liberated, but never truly free; and having no peace despite her children and grandchildren.
