Wolf R. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Wolf R., who was born in Łask, Poland in 1914, one of three brothers. He recounts graduation from public school; attending university in Warsaw in 1932 in preparation for medical school in Berlin; returning home in 1933 due to the election of the Nazi government in Germany; his relatives in Berlin emigrating to London; active participation in Maccabi; attending Maccabi courses in Skole; becoming the bookkeeper for his father's and grandmother's businesses; attending university in Warsaw beginning in 1936; organized and random antisemitic harassment; one professor who supported the Jewish students; returning home in summer 1939 to study for final exams; his mother going to London to attend a family bar mitzvah; German invasion; employment as secretary to Kochman, head of the Judenrat; his father's participation on the Judenrat; ghettoization; visiting Warsaw twice with Kochman to receive funds from the Joint to purchase food for the ghetto; receiving letters from his mother through the Red Cross until the United States entered the war; the terrible dilemma of the Judenrat having to choose workers to be deported for forced labor; and a public hanging of two brothers for stealing.
