Egon and Mina H. and Gerda and Samuel A. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Egon and Mina H. Egon H. was born in Berlin, Germany in 1923. He recounts his family's proud German identity; destruction of their business on Kristallnacht; his father's decision to emigrate to Shanghai, the only place open to them; his father opening a grocery store; working in a metal factory; Japanese occupation; anti-Jewish restrictions, including ghettoization; assistance from the Joint and HIAS; food shortages and lack of sanitation; Allied bombings in July 1945; learning of the Holocaust after the war; and emigration to join uncles in the United States. Mina H. was born in Vienna, Austria in 1925. She recalls sudden anti-Jewish restrictions; her father's emigration to Shanghai in March 1939; following with her mother and brother a few months later; her father establishing a tailoring business; attending school a few months; leaving to work in her father's business; retaining their customers after ghettoization; meeting her future husband at a Zionist organization meeting; marriage in January 1947; emigration to the United States; her parents following; and lack of empathy from American relatives. In addition to information included in HVT-4366, Samuel and Gerda A. discuss with Egon and Mina H. the lack of understanding of the plight of European Jews by Americans, including Jews.
