Abstract

Videotape testimony of Bery S., who was born in Galați, Romania in 1930. She recounts her family's move to Izmaïl; her parents' divorce; celebrating Passover with her extended family; her mother's remarriage and move to Bucharest; living with her grandmother; attending public school; their move to Bucharest in 1940; her grandmother's return to Izmaïl; anti-Jewish restrictions; attending a Jewish school; hiding during violence against Jews; seeing corpses in the street; renting part of their house to the Swiss embassy, which provided some protection; being protected by her stepfather's friend who belonged to the fascist Garda de Fier; keeping two Jewish children with them; Allied bombings; liberation by Soviet troops; visiting her aunt and uncle in Botoșani; meeting her future husband; her stepfather defecting to Austria; paying to be smuggled with her family and future husband to Budapest; joining her stepfather in Vienna; moving to Paris; marriage; emigration to the United States; and her husband's draft during the Korean War. Ms. S. discusses communication from her biological father for a short time from the Soviet Union; finding his cousin in Israel; the murders of beloved family members in the Holocaust, including her uncle and grandparents; and her sense of guilt for having survived.
