Paulina D. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Paulina D., a Catholic Romani, who was born in Čierny Balog, Czechoslovakia (presently Slovakia) in 1935, one of four children. She recalls her mother was a widow; their poverty; working in fields or as house servants; working for the one Jewish family in town, who liked them very much; her sister's marriage in ľubietová and the births of her two children; she and her mother living with her sister; vandalism of the house when the war started; her sister and her sister's husband being killed; she and her mother raising their children; returning to their town to find their house had been burned down; living with her brother; deportation of their former Jewish employer; being hidden by a local priest; marriage; her uncle, a prominent musician with whom her husband often played, losing his leg and having his house burned down; her mother's death; continuing to raise her sister's children; hiding in the woods and in the homes of non-Romanies; Hlinka guards betraying partisans to German soldiers; her husband serving in the military; identifying her sister's body by the clothing during a disinterment after the war; rebuilding their house, and raising nine children (three had died earlier).
