Chaim H. Holocaust testimony

Videotape testimony of Chaim H., who was born in Radziwillow, Poland (presently Radyvyliv, Ukraine) in 1927, one of three children. He recounts attending Jewish and public schools; his family's move to Brody in 1939; Soviet occupation; attending a Russian school; German invasion in 1941; fleeing east; returning home; his father's round-up by Ukrainian SS; observing a mass shooting of Jewish men, including his father; his grandfather's death resulting from being beaten by a German; escaping into the fields during a round-up; hiding with his family; forced labor for Organisation Todt building an airport; ghettoization; escaping; living and working with Ukrainian families as a non-Jew; traveling to Piaksi, then another town; joining a partisan group, then the Soviet Army; attending a driving school in the Soviet Union; learning his brother had survived; a brief reunion with him before his brother's draft into the Soviet military; moving to a Gordonyah kibbutz in Bytom; assisting with illegal emigration to Bari via Bratislava and Vienna; living in Barletta; illegal emigration to Palestine by ship; interdiction by the British; incarceration on Cyprus; escape; the Palmaḥ smuggling him into Palestine; serving in the Israel-Arab war; and marriage. Mr. H. discussess his brother's emigration to Israel in 1957; losing his faith due to his experiences, but returning to it after his son was killed in the Yom Kippur war; and a recent visit to the Ukraine.
