Dietrich G. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Dietrich G., who was born in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany in 1914, one of three children. In addition to information included in a previously recorded testimony (HVT-1106), he recounts his family practicing Protestantism; his father's German nationalism; moving to Stuttgart, then Potsdam, where his father worked at the Reichsarchiv; visiting his Jewish grandparents in Hamburg; his brother's emigration to England; participating in a German Christian student group; attending a lecture by Niemöller; his sister's emigration to England; graduation from the Technical University of Berlin in 1938; working for a man who protected many workers of mixed Jewish heritage; hiding a Russian woman in his home; traveling to Göttingen after the war; marriage; and living in England for eighteen months. Mr. G. discusses antisemitism in postwar Germany, and sharing his story with his children and grandchildren. He reads from a pamphlet by his great-grandfather, and shows documents and photographs.
