Abstract

Videotape testimony of Henrich F., who was born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia (presently Slovakia) in 1928, the older of two sons. He recalls a close, extended family; cordial relations with non-Jews; conversion to Evangelical Christrianity in 1940; attending a state school; more teachers wearing Hlinka guard uniforms as time passed; expulsion from school because he was a "new" Christian; eviction from their home; an Aryan taking over the family business; his parents continuing to work there; the new owner shielding them from deportations; visiting relatives in Nitra; attending an Evangelical retreat with his brother in Brezová pod Bradlom for two months; hiding with assistance from non-Jews after the Slovak uprising; the owner of their business arranging for him to hide with a family in Podunajské Biskupice; learning his parents and brother had been deported; liberation by Soviet troops; his rescuers offering to adopt him; his father's return (his mother and brother had been killed); marriage; and the births of two sons. Mr. F. discusses warm memories of Bratislava and credits his survival to non-Jews who helped him. He shows photographs.
