Abstract
Videotape testimony of Imrich H., who was born in Prešov, Czecholslovkia (presently Slovkia) in 1923, the youngest of three children. He recalls cordial relations with non-Jews; a wonderful childhood; antisemitism beginning in 1938; participating in Hashomer Hatzair; his father's death from illness in 1940; expulsion from school as a Jew in 1941; keeping a diary; hiding after deportations started; obtaining false papers as a Slovak; moving to Bratislava in June 1942; finding a job; living with a family (they did not know he was Jewish), then in his workplace; visiting his parents in Sabinov in December 1942 and summer 1943; hiding Jews in his living quarters; helping create false papers; arrest and beating by the Gestapo; deportation to Sered, then to Theresienstadt in April 1945; liberation in May; returning home in June; joining the Communist Party for idealistic reasons; disillusionment leading to his escape to Canada to join his sisters in 1968; returning home after three months to be with his family; and no further career advancements for twenty years due to his politics. Mr. H. notes he identifies himself both as a Czech and a Jew. He shows photographs, documents, and his diary from which he reads briefly.
