Magdalena S. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Magdalena S., who was born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia (presently Slovakia) in 1920. She recalls attending gymnasium; annual visits to relatives in Kostolné Moravce; Hlinka guard breaking into her graduation dinner; not being able to enter university due to anti-Jewish laws; her grandmother moving in with them when her apartment was confiscated; confiscation of her father's law office; starting a kindergarten in their residence in 1940; confiscation of their apartment ten months later; living with a family in Ivanka pri Dunaji when forced to leave Bratislava; her parents' plan to send her to relatives in Hungary to avoid deportation in 1942; traveling to relatives in Kozárovce; arrest at a bus stop in Dudince; imprisonment in Krupina, then Bratislava; avoidance of two transports because her number was not called; a physician giving her a shot to make her ill to avoid future transports; hospitalization; having to report to police daily in Bernolákovo when she was released; marriage to a physician in May; exemption from deportation due to her marriage; two years of relative calm; fleeing to Banská Bystrica during the Slovak uprising in October 1944; joining a partisan group; placement with a famer because the commander would not accept a woman; separation from her husband when fleeing during a German attack; staying with people in a village who treated her like a member of their family; liberation by Soviet troops; returning to Bratislava; and learning her parents had survived in hiding. Ms. S. notes many relatives, including her beloved grandmother, who were killed and not being able to recover from these losses.
