Abstract

Videotape testimony of Zvi O., who was born in Burdujeni, Romania in 1933. He recalls expulsion from school in 1940; attending a Jewish school in Dorohoi; deportation with his family in October 1941; a few days in a synagogue in Mogilev; traveling to Luchinets; spending the winter in barracks; his brother's death during a typhus epidemic; his father's attempted suicide and eventual death; moving to Tropovo; pervasive hunger; antisemitic harassment by local children; contracting typhus in summer 1942; repatriation in early 1944; returning to Dorohoi; liberation by Soviet troops; moving to Bucharest; his mother's remarriage; joining Hashomer Hatzair; running away due to conflicts with his stepfather; traveling to Burgas to prepare for illegal emigration to Palestine; boarding an "aliyah" ship in 1947; interception by the British; incarceration on Cyprus; entering Palestine; living on a kibbutz; marriage; attending medical school; military service, including the Six Day and Yom Kippur Wars; and emigration to the United States in 1979. Dr. O. discusses feeling subhuman due to his war experiences; these feelings diminishing after officer training; and his children's lack of interest in his experiences, except his youngest. He shows photographs and documents.
