Abstract

Videotape testimony of Sophi Z., who was born in Volochisk, Ukraine in 1923. She recounts her family's affluence; her brother's birth in 1927; entering university in Kiev in 1940; their move to a village for her father's job managing a sugar factory; traveling to Vinnyt︠s︡i︠a︡ for a tonsillectomy; returning home on June 20, 1941; German invasion; confiscation of their home; the murder of five prominent Jewish leaders; her father continuing to manage the factory; her mother informing people she was not Jewish (she did not "look Jewish"); ghettoization; receiving letters in spring 1942 from school friends in Kordelevka offering her assistance; a round-up for a mass killing which included her father; escaping with her mother and brother; hiding with assistance from Ukrainians; traveling to Kordelevka; friends and teachers hiding her and providing false papers; returning to Vinnyt︠s︡i︠a︡; imprisonment; escaping with help from non-Jewish friends; arrest while seeking a job; escaping; connecting with a partisan group in the forest; many missions as a scout, including one liberating POWs; capture, then imprisonment with Romanian women; keeping their morale up with songs despite torture; escaping; hiding with partisan contacts; arrival of Soviet troops; returning to Vinnyt︠s︡i︠a︡; reunion with her mother and brother; completing law school in Kiev; marriage; and the births of two daughters. Ms. Z. discusses frequent nightmares resulting from her experiences; continuing contacts with partisan colleagues; and emigrating to Israel. She shows photographs, documents, and publications.
