Ada V. Holocaust testimony

Videotape testimony of Ada V., who was born in 1929 in Warsaw, Poland, the only child in an affluent home. She recounts attending a Jewish school; frequent, pleasant visits to her mother's family in Paris; German invasion; Germans beating her father; his escape to Czyżew in the Soviet zone; being smuggled with her mother to join him; attending a Soviet school; participating in Komsomol; her father enlisting in the Soviet military (they never saw him again); German invasion; ghettoization; her mother paying smugglers to bring them to the Warsaw ghetto; she, her mother, and grandmother obtaining jobs in a brush factory; round-up of her mother (she never saw her again); hiding with her grandmother during round-ups; her uncle obtaining false papers for her; escaping over the ghetto wall; living with non-Jews in Rembertów; her aunt moving her to a Polish family for whom she babysat and who hid many other Jews; attending church; her aunt's weekly visits; fleeing during the 1944 Polish uprising; deportation as a Pole to Pruszków; forced labor on a farm in Oschatz; assistance from a Polish admirer; liberation by Soviet troops; Poles she worked with offering to adopt her; returning home; reunion with an aunt and uncle; living in Kalisz; attending university; summers in Ciechocinek; marriage; and emigration to Israel. Ms. V. discusses identifying a Jewish girl who had been hidden with her so she could be returned to her father; continuing contact with the woman who hid her (she was honored by Yad Vashem); hoarding food due to her experiences; and ghetto songs that she sings.
