Abstract

Videotape testimony of Ladislav L., who was born in Lazy pod Makytou, Czechoslovakia in 1918. He recounts attending school in Prešov; traveling to emigrate to the United States in spring 1939; German soldiers stopping him in Horní Lideč; apprenticeship as a mechanic in Trenčín; paying to avoid military draft; working for a farmer in Kuzmice, using false papers; visiting a friend in Bojná; denunciation and arrest in Radošina; incarceration in Nitra; assistance from the Jewish community; transfer to Sered; a privileged position working for Kommandant Imrich Vasina, allowing him to leave camp; bribing the Hlinka guards to smuggle food, letters, and packages; obtaining false papers in Bratislava; escaping with several other prisoners in 1944; hiding in Vlčkovce and Zvolen; hearing about the Slovak uprising; traveling to Banská Bystrica to join the partisans; assignment to Špania Dolina; battles resulting in high casualties; digging shelters in the mountains to hide people and weapons; fighting with three German deserters; patrols in many locations; attending officer's training in Poprad; and studying in Bratislava. Mr. L. notes the deportations and killings of his parents, brother, sister and her child.
