Tzila P. Holocaust testimony

Videotape testimony of Tzila P., who was born near Chernivt︠s︡i, Ukraine in 1905, one of five children. She recalls her family's orthodoxy; cordial relations with non-Jews; falling under Romanian rule in 1918; obstetrical training in Iași; marriage; moving to Khotyn; the births of three children; Soviet occupation in 1940; German and Romanian occupation in July 7, 1941; her husband's arrest; learning he was shot in a mass killing; deportation with her children to Transnistria in August; trading belongings for food; transfer to Ataki; encountering her sister; their transfer to Mohyliv-Podilʹsʹkyī, then Popovtsy; starvation; working for Ukrainians; a peasant giving her son food every day; occasionally leaving the ghetto seeking food; refusing to comply with the Judenrat's order to send her children to Romania; liberation by Soviet troops in April 1944; returning home; working as a midwife; moving to Chernivt︠s︡i three years later; her older daughter's marriage in 1949; and emigration to Israel in 1975. Ms. P. notes that her children survived due to assistance from peasants.
