Grigoriĭ D. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Grigoriĭ D., who was born in Sunai, Belarus in 1922. He recalls living in a rural area; cordial relations with non-Jews; completing high school in Grozovo; attending the Polytechnic in Minsk; his father's arrest in 1938 as a spy because he had siblings in western nations (he was executed); his sister's medical practice in Lenino; German invasion in June 1941 while he was in Slutsk; joining his mother, sister, and brother in Lenino; obtaining a Soviet machine gun; giving it to partisans; solidarity in the ghetto; escaping with his brother with assistance from non-Jews; his sister joining them; joining the Voroshilov partisan brigade; learning his mother and nephew were murdered in a mass killing; numerous battles with Germans in the Kapylʹski area; his brother being wounded in July 1942; keeping a diary; moving to the Li︠u︡banski region in spring 1943; his sister providing medical aid; the brigade moving to the Bialowieza Forest in September 1943, then to Lithuania; attacks by the Armia Krajowa; liberating Zheludok with Soviet troops; military service in Brest; demobilization in 1946; completing his studies; marriage; and living in Grodno and Minsk. Mr. D. discusses the heroism of Jewish partisans; many non-Jews who helped him; dedication of a monument to the murdered Jews of Lenino in 1985; and the increasing pain of his memories. He shows photographs.
