Abstract

Videotape testimony of Majer A., who was born in Sarajevo, Austro-Hungarian Monarchy (presently Bosnia) in 1915. He recalls his family's orthodoxy; his father's active role in Jewish and civic affairs; developing leftist leanings; studying law in Belgrade and Paris; Yugoslav military service; discrimination against Jews in the military; briefly working for a law firm; German invasion in spring 1941; assignment to a unit in Slavonski Brod; being disarmed by Croats; returning to Sarajevo; sending his parents south; escaping as German troops arrived; meeting his parents in Konjic; traveling to Dubrovnik (his parents returned to Sarajevo); Italian occupation; briefly visiting his parents to convince them to escape (they refused); living in Split, then Korčula; benign treatment by the Italians; contacts with partisans, including Cadik D.; Italian capitulation; joining partisans in Split; being wounded; evacuation to Brač Island; returning to Korčula Island; guarding a British officer; retreating from a German/Ustaša offensive to Hvar; assignments on Brač, Hvar, and Vis islands; liberating Hvar, Korčula, Pelješa, Šibenik, and Knin; and serving as an artillery officer until the war was over. Mr. A. discusses his parents' murders in concentration camps; his military career in Belgrade and Zagreb; and participating in the Jewish community.
