Abstract

Videotape testimony of Vera L., who was born in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, an only child. She recounts her family's Zionism; participating in Maccabi sports club; attending a Jewish school; joining Hashomer Hatzair; anti-Jewish restrictions preventing her from studying at the university; her fiancé's military draft (he was captured by the Germans); German invasion in April 1941; Ustaša searching their home and evicting them; her father's arrest and deportation to Jasenovac; living with several friends, Jews and non-Jews; moving to Sombor; obtaining false papers from friends; a policeman confiscating their papers en route to Split; an Italian soldier retrieving their papers; living with friends; arrest with her mother by Italian police; her mother feigning illness to obtain transfer to a hospital; local Jews arranging for her release; their denouncement; transfer to Novi Vinodolski; "free confinement" (confino libero); deportation to Kraljevica (she and her mother were the only Jews); negotiating with Italian guards to improve conditions; assignment to the food distribution unit; social activities; ship transfer in June 1943 to Rab island; the camp underground taking control after Italian capitulation in September 1943; returning to Zagreb; reunion with her fiancé in August 1945; marriage; living in Sarajevo; and emigration to Israel in 1950. She shows photographs.
