Abstract

A continuation of the videotape testimony of Rafael A., who recalls German bombing of Belgrade in April 1941; escaping southward, intending to emigrate to Palestine; encountering German tanks in Užice; returning to Belgrade; forced labor removing corpses in Smederevo; his parents' visit; a furlough in Belgrade; traveling to Niš, then to Pirot to join his family; living near Rachel A., his future wife, and her family; benign Bulgarian occupation; visiting relatives in Sofia; conscription for forced labor in spring 1942; returning to Pirot in November; anti-Jewish restrictions; a round-up with his parents and Rachel A.'s mother; a week in Dobruja; escaping from a train transport; walking to Lom; traveling to Sofia; reunion with Rachel A.'s family, including her mother who also had escaped; obtaining false papers; traveling to Skopje, then into Albania; assistance from local Albanians who knew they were Jews: living in Kavajë; arrival of Germans; fleeing to Shkodër disguised as Muslims; boarding a boat for Italy in February 1944; being greeted by Yugoslav partisans; traveling to Monopoli, then Bari; and illegally emigrating to Palestine in May.
