Chanah G. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Chanah G., who was born in Cluj, Romania in 1926. She recounts her father's death when she was an infant; being sent to a foster family in a village when she was two; returning to Cluj to learn a trade from her sister; engagement in spring 1944; German invasion in March; ghettoization; deportation to Auschwitz with her fianceĚ, his brother, her sisters, and mother; separation from her fianceĚ (she never saw him again); contemplating suicide, but not wanting to do so in front of her mother and sisters; their transfer to Hainichen in October; improved conditions; slave labor; transfer to Theresienstadt; liberation by Soviet troops; returning to Cluj; marriage; living in Austria; her daughter's birth; emigration to Israel; divorce; and subsequent marriages. Ms. G. discusses nightmares and insomnia resulting from her experiences; living for her children and grandchildren; difficulty discussing her memories and more difficulty living with them; being one of the only families from Cluj to survive (her mother, two sisters and brother also survived); and other random reflections.
