He describes childhood friendships with Jews; defending Jews against attacks as part of Hashomer; meeting Mordecai Anielewicz; membership in the Polish Socialist Party; mobilization in the Polish military; German invasion; capture; escape from a prisoner-of-war camp to W?oc?awek; helping Jews escape to the Soviet Union; escape to Warsaw to avoid arrest for helping Jews; his brother's execution for hiding Jews; ghettoization; observing terrible conditions during ghetto visits; smuggling Jews out; establishing a restaurant in order to build a bunker in which to hide Jews; meetings with Anielewicz; obtaining false papers for Jews; purchasing arms for the Jewish underground; destruction of the ghetto in the 1943 uprising; moving to the countryside during the Warsaw 1944 uprising; and sending packages to Jews in Skarz?ysko-Kamienna. Mr. S. recalls returning to Warsaw after the war; diplomatic work in Austria and London; working on a farm; traveling to Israel to be honored by Yad Vashem; and continuing cordial relations with those he saved and their families.
