Abstract

Videotape testimony of Leon K., who was born in Krako?w, Poland in 1920. He recalls antisemitic harassment; plans to attend university in the United States in 1939; not leaving due to German invasion; ghettoization; his father's arrest (he never saw him again); arranging to smuggle his mother and sister to Hungary (they were caught and killed); arrest when they were caught; being sent to P?aszo?w; smuggling goods into the camp; learning of Schindler's list in 1944; arranging to be on it through a schoolmate who compiled the list (Marcel Goldberg); deportation with the men briefly to Gross-Rosen, then to Czechoslovakia; meeting his future wife; liberation by Soviet troops; returning to Poland; marriage in Krako?w; leaving due to antisemitic violence; living in Paris, then Grenoble; his daughter's birth; emigration to Canada in 1954; and encountering Oskar Schindler in Israel in 1971. Mr. K. discusses sharing his story with his daughter; his wife's difficulty sharing her story; and nightmares resulting from his experiences.
