Palomba M., Riketta C., and Vida C. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Palomba M., Riketta C., and Vida C., sisters who were born in Thessalonike?, Greece: Palomba and Riketta in 1937 and Vida in 1939. They recount German bombardment; staying with their mother, grandparents, and others; traveling with their parents to Athens; enrollment in a Catholic school; visits from their parents until they were deported (they never saw their father again); living with a female friend who was in the underground; a priest who worked for the underground, hiding them elsewhere when exposure was threatened (he was later executed); positive feelings about Catholicism; separation from each other at times; placement in a Joint orphanage after the war; living with their friend who had previously helped them (they called her mother); reunion with their grandparents (they had survived in hiding) and mother; returning to Thessalonike?; attending school in Greece and abroad; and their careers. They discuss their grandfather's experience; residual fears after the war; continuing relations with nuns who saved them; learning other Jewish children were hidden in their school; and the absence of antisemitism in Greece.
