Henry R. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Henry R., who was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1912. He recalls his family's affluence; attending a secular private school; bar mitzvah preparation; antisemitic discrimination; entering veterinary school; being drafted into the Polish officer corps; German invasion; serving in Rivne; transfer to Radul?; becoming the head of his unit; disintegration of the army in defeat; returning to Warsaw; ghettoization; escaping to Dab?rowica; being warned prior to a round-up; escaping; seeking help from Count Jan Zamoyski, who was not immediately available; returning to Warsaw; arrest and incarceration; escape; receiving false papers from a Polish friend; Count Zamoyski agreeing to employ him in a remote village under his assumed name; avoiding social encounters; helping villagers because few were literate; assisting the bishop at religious ceremonies; and liberation by Soviet troops. Dr. R. discusses receiving Polish military decorations; losing his citizenship when he emigrated; and reconstruction of his documents by Yad Vashem.
