W?adys?aw L. Holocaust testimony

Videotape testimony of W?adys?aw L., who was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1901. He recalls attending medical school in Vilna due to restrictions against Jews in Warsaw; transferring to Warsaw due to his high grades; practicing in Warsaw; German invasion in September 1939; fleeing east with his wife via Bia?a Podlaska and Kobryn; settling in Pinsk, in the Soviet-occupied zone; deportation with all refugees to Arkhangel?sk; working in hospitals; imprisonment in 1943 as an American spy; signing a false confession to spare his wife and to avoid additional torture; an eight year sentence to a labor camp; working as a physician there until 1951; deportation to Siberia upon his release; working as a physician there until 1955 when Polish detainees were repatriated; returning to Warsaw; emigration to the United States in 1957; and working as a physician. Dr. L. notes ignorance of outside news while in the Soviet Union; learning his family had been killed in the Holocaust; his wife divorcing him while he was in the labor camp; and his remarriage. He shows photographs and documents.
