Pearl T. Holocaust testimony

Videotape testimony of Pearl T., who was born in Czernowitz, Romania (presently Chernivt?s?i, Ukraine) in 1929. She recalls visits to grandparents in Ruskova on Jewish holidays; her father's job requiring their move to a small town; witnessing the beheading of neighbors by Ukrainians when the war started; their return to Czernowitz; ghettoization in 1941; her father's murder by Germans; deportation to Bessarabia; a death march on which her sister and grandmother were shot; agricultural slave labor with her mother and aunt; train transfer of child prisoners with her aunt (they were the same age) in early 1944; jumping from the train to remain with her mother; being beaten and left for dead; a Ukrainian physician finding and hiding her; the doctor's friend helping her mother escape and hide; liberation in summer 1944; reunion with her mother; their return to Czernowitz; attending a Soviet school; moving to Katowice with her mother and cousin; joining a kibbutz in Sosnowiec; transfer of the kibbutz to Fo?hrenwald displaced persons camp; marriage in 1947; her child's birth; and emigration with her mother and family, with assistance from the Joint, to join relatives in the United States. Ms. T. notes her rescuers' request that she not contact them during the Soviet regime and reluctance to share her experiences with her children in order to shield them from pain. She shows photographs.
