Abstract

Videotape testimony of Suzy G., who was born in Paris, France. She recalls a close and large extended family; her father serving in the military; her mother's miscarriage during the German invasion in 1940; visiting her father in the hospital after he was wounded; remaining with her grandmother when her mother hid with a non-Jewish policeman; her mother's return; her father's discharge in Limoges; she and her mother joining him using false papers; protection by non-Jewish neighbors; being sent away to hide with non-Jews; being moved several times; visits from her mother; seeing the smoke after the burning of Oradour-sur-Glane; being moved to a convent in Gue?ret; becoming ill; hospitalization and surgery; her mother retrieving her; living with her parents and infant sister in Limoges; returning to Paris after liberation; her parents adopting a cousin whose parents were deported; encountering antisemitism; emigration to the United States; marriage; and the births of three children. Ms. G. discusses her sense of anxiety, panic, and isolation resulting from her experiences; not sharing them with her children until recently; and many relatives being killed in the Holocaust.
