Abstract

Videotape testimony of Jacqueline W., who was born in Epinal, France in 1928. She recounts her parents' emigration from Poland; the outbreak of war; her father's enlistment; German invasion; fleeing with her mother, younger sister (Josette), and cousin to unoccupied France; returning to Epinal; antisemitic restrictions; her father's return; her parents hiding Josette with non-Jews in another town; arrest with her father in July 1942; her mother's arrest; separation from her parents (she never saw them again); reunion with Josette; moving to her cousin's home in unoccupied France; attending boarding school in Avignon; staying with her aunt's family near Vichy; finding another hiding place with assistance from her father's friend; posing as a Catholic; traveling to Arles using false papers to get Josette; working in Clermont-Ferrand; liberation in 1944; returning to Epinal; she and Josette seeking their parents in Paris; living in an orphanage; and emigration to the United States in 1945 to join relatives. Mrs. W. discusses strained relations with her relatives; Josette's placement in an orphanage until she could care for her; continuing contacts with many in France who helped save them; psychological scars; writing her memoirs; and recently sharing her story with her children.
