Abstract

Videotape of Golly D., who was born in Bremen, Germany in 1922 of a Jewish father and a Christian mother who had converted to Judaism. She recalls her orthodox upbringing; antisemitic incidents; her brother's and father's arrests on Kristallnacht; expulsion from school; unsuccessful efforts to emigrate; studying nursing in Berlin in 1940; working in the Jewish Hospital, where she met her future husband, a physician; her brother's deportation from Bremen (he was killed); joining her fiance in Theresienstadt in 1943; their marriage by Dr. Leo Baeck; sham improvements for a Red Cross visit; her husband's deportation in 1944 (she never saw him again); and seeking Dr. Baeck's advice about joining her husband (Dr. Baeck did not tell her what to do). Mrs. D. describes deportation to Birkenau; humiliating conditions; transfer to a labor camp; a four-month death march through Saxony to Bohemia; kindness from a German policeman; escaping the march with a friend; receiving food from a farmer; liberation by United States troops; recuperating in a hospital; meeting her second husband; and encountering Dr. Baeck's housekeeper.
