Frieda S. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Frieda S., who was born in Eindhoven, Netherlands in 1936. She recounts her family's emigration to Holland in 1935; hospitalization in Leiden for a congenital problem; German invasion; anti-Jewish measures which resulted in the postponement of her surgery; her parents arranging to hide her in the hospital in 1942 (her younger sister was hidden in a convent); with assistance from her parents' non-Jewish friend, leaving the hospital due to a Nazi doctor; placement in a convent; transfer after challenging the Mother Superior's statement that the Jews crucified Jesus; hiding with her parents' friend; liberation by United States troops in September 1944; seeing her parents and sisters after two years; hip surgeries in 1945 and 1946; and her marriage. Mrs. S. discusses the trauma of separation from her parents; resulting emotional problems; unconsciously transferring these problems to her son; and the importance of her family's love to her recovery.
