Andre?e H. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Andre?e H., a non-Jewish rescuer, who was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1921. She recalls the important influence of her father's love of children; completing normal school in 1942; internships in schools in Brussels' Jewish quarter; noticing children "disappearing"; horror upon learning of German round-ups and deportations; asking relatives to hide Jewish children; being contacted by and joining a resistance group which hid Jewish children (Comite? de de?fense des juifs); approaching Jewish parents to suggest that their children be hidden; bringing the children to be hidden with families and in orphanages and convents; reuniting children with surviving parents after the war; and providing financial assistance to the reunited families. Ms. H. discusses many people and institutions associated with hiding Jewish children in Belgium; the organization and finances of her resistance movement; their system for recording information and keeping it secret; some German soldiers who "looked the other way"; close relations with the children during and after the war; joy in meeting those she helped to save; the unprecedented intensity of the wartime period; and her confidence, calm, and sense of purpose resulting from these experiences.
