Abstract

Videotape testimony of Josef M., who was born in Szyd?owiec, Poland in 1916. He recalls antisemitic boycotts; German invasion; anti-Jewish restrictions and violence; deportation to Starachowice in September 1942; learning his family was deported to Treblinka the next day; volunteering to return to Szyd?owiec in January 1943; reunion with a sister; jumping from a deportation train; assistance from a Polish policeman and a Polish neighbor; being hidden by non-Jews; assistance from a Polish doctor and pharmacist when he was ill; being smuggled into Wolano?w; escaping to the Radom ghetto; living with an uncle; volunteering for transfer to Starachowice in 1944; slave labor in the munitions factory; escaping with six others in July 1944; hiding on farms; attempting to join the Armia Krajowa; rejection as Jews; liberation by Soviet troops in March; returning home; learning about the extermination camps; hearing of planned Polish anti-Jewish violence; traveling to ?o?dz?, Szczucin, then Stuttgart; briefly living in a displaced persons camp; assistance from UNRRA; meeting his future wife in Munich; and emigration to the United States in 1949. Mr. M. discusses recent visits with his son to Auschwitz, Treblinka, and his rescuer in Szyd?owiec; being the sole survivor of his family; and sharing his story with his children. He shows photographs.
