Benjamin M. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Benjamin M., who was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1918. In addition to information included in previously recorded testimonies (HVT-194 and HVT-939), Mr. M. recounts observing the indifference of many Poles while he was living as a Christian outside the ghetto during the Jewish uprising; arranging a hiding place for his parents and sister in Praga with the help of Poles; constructing hiding places for other Jews; the Polish uprising; fleeing to a village with his future wife; returning to Warsaw after liberation to find Jews in a bunker he had built; reunion with his parents and sister; living in ?o?dz?; marriage; and emigrating to the United States in 1946. Mr. M. discusses the importance of many Poles to his and his family's survival; fears resulting from his experiences; the importance of remembering the Holocaust; his efforts to promote formal and organized remembrance events; organizing survivor gatherings, a registry, educational programs, and museums; his appreciation of the freedoms in the United States and his gratitude to it; and sharing his experiences and remembrance activities with his children.
