Abstract

Videotape testimony of Edward S., who was born in Krako?w, Poland in 1920. He recalls his orthodox home; attending Jewish elementary and public high school; speaking Polish with his parents; pervasive antisemitism, particularly in schools; graduation from engineering school; German invasion; fleeing east with his brother and sister; returning to Krako?w; working in a German factory; deportation to Pustko?w in December 1940; arduous slave labor; a two-week furlough home; hiding to avoid returning; ghettoization with his family in February 1941; his parents' deportation (he never saw them again); hiding with assistance from his German boss; deportation with his sister to P?aszo?w in December 1942; random shooting by the commandent; public hangings for food smugling; burying people, some of whom were still alive; transfer to Pionki; tensions between Yiddish and non-Yiddish speakers; operating the camp's steam generators; transfer to Auschwitz in June 1944, then to Gleiwitz; receiving extra food from his German foreman; an SS guard breaking his finger for not working hard enough; a death march through Germany in January 1945; escaping with three others; liberation by Soviet troops; returning to Krako?w; reunion with his sister; moving to Gleiwitz; marriage; moving to Sweden in 1949 to escape antisemitism; and emigration to the United States in 1951. He shows documents.
