Abstract

Videotape testimony of Yitzhak A., who was born in Sulejo?w, Poland in 1917; his Hasidic home; antisemitism in public school; working in ?o?dz?; involvement in communism; German invasion; traveling to Warsaw with his brother to defend Poland; capture by SS when returning to ?o?dz?; assistance from a fellow-communist; escaping with his brother; marriage in November; traveling with his wife toward Soviet territory; wandering for months in Hrodna; Presovtse; and Stolin; settling in Presovtse; working for the Red Army; German invasion in June 1941; meeting with a small group planning to find arms and escape to the woods; observing the shooting of a Jewish boy in Kovel?; a non-Jew who warned them of round-ups; escaping to the woods to fight the Germans; raiding villages; joining other partisans; many operations against and escapes from Germans and antisemitic partisans; joining up with Soviet forces in Rivne; persuading and organizing Jews to leave for Palestine; traveling to Kiev;, then Lublin; organizing with Abba Kovner and other former partisans; and traveling to Bucharest, then Italy. Mr. A. discusses the beauty of his town and childhood; details of partisan life; and wanting revenge after the war.
