Abstract

Videotape testimony of Arieh F., a twin, who was born in a village in Czechoslovakia in approximately 1929. He recalls his family's farm; attending a Slovak school with his twin brother, then a Jewish school in nearby Nitra; antisemitism beginning with Slovak independence in early 1939; transports of Jews to unknown destinations; his and his brother's b'nai mitzvah in 1942; his father's deportation to Nova?ky in 1943; being hidden with his brother in Bratislava; his mother's deportation to Nova?ky; surrendering themselves to join their parents; being guarded by Hlinka guard; administration of Nova?ky by the Jewish prisoners; schools and cultural events; escaping during the camp revolt in August 1944; joining an aunt who was hiding as a non-Jew in Karvina?, using false papers as non-Jews; hiding in a grave-like hole in the field of a non-Jew; returning to their own village; hiding with several non-Jewish famers; learning his aunt had been killed trying to bring them money; surrendering themselves when they no longer could find hiding places; his brother's debilitation from tuberculosis; deportation to Theresienstadt; forced labor; liberation by Soviet troops; returning to Bratislava ten days later; encountering antisemitism when reclaiming their house, and emigration to Israel in 1949.
