Shabtai S. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Shabtai S., who was born in S?wie?cany, Poland in 1934. He recalls the family's move to Biecz; his parents' hardware store; German invasion; the men, including his father, fleeing to the Soviet zone; staying on his grandfather's farm near Sanok; his father's brief return before being ordered back (he never saw him again); hiding with his mother and others during a round-up in 1942; returning to S?wie?cany; receiving food and shelter from non-Jewish friends; living in the forest; hiding with his mother for twenty-nine months with two farmers (his grandparents and aunt were hiding on a nearby farm); his grandmother's surrender to the Germans (she was killed); liberation in 1945 by Soviet troops; living in a Jewish orphanage; moving to Paris with his mother; living in a Jewish orphanage; their emigration to La Paz, Bolivia in 1947; attending school in Oruro; thirty-month's service in the Israeli Army beginning in 1952; moving to Peru; and marriage. Mr. S. discusses on-going problems due to his experiences; believing only survivors can understand his experiences; sharing his past with his children; visiting Poland with his mother in 1989; attending the Hidden Children conference; and his continuing belief in God. He shows photographs and artifacts.
