Michael S. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Michael S., who was born in the outskirts of Czernowitz, Romania (presently Chernivt?s?ii, Ukraine) in 1931, one of six children. He recalls attending public school and cheder; Soviet occupation in 1940; attending a Russian school; German and Romanian invasion in June 1941; round-up to a school; a forced march via Luzhany, Bershad?, and Berezne to Mohyliv; killings and deaths from starvation and exposure en route; joining relatives in the Bershad? ghetto; his uncle's and parents' deaths in 1942; assistance from the Joint; his bar mitzvah; transfer with his brother and other Jewish children to orphanages in Balta, then Yarovoye; an appendectomy; kind treatment by the orphanage staff and local Jews; liberation by Soviet troops; repatriation with his brother; reunion with all his siblings; separating to flee the communist government; traveling to Bucharest with his sister; illegal emigration from Burgas to Palestine in September 1947; interdiction by the British; brief internment on Cyprus, then ?Atlit in December 1947; arrival of five siblings (one sister had emigrated to the United States); military service in 1952; emigration to the United States in 1959 to join his sister; marriage; and his son's birth. Mr. S. discusses details of prewar life and the hardships he endured; persistent nightmares; and sharing his experiences with his son. He shows photographs.
