Felix A. Holocaust testimony

Videotape testimony of Felix A., who was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany in 1922. He describes life in Bockenheim; his family's business; elementary school in Bockenheim from 1927-1931; increasing antisemitism from 1931 on; anti-Jewish legislation resulting in greatly reduced income and lose of their house; moving to Frankfurt; SA youths attacking his father thus causing Mr. A.'s loss of faith; Realgymnasium in Frankfurt from 1931 to 1935; and the Philanthropin, a Jewish school, from 1935 to 1937. Mr. A. recalls leaving school in 1937 to learn the leather goods trade; his sister's emigration to England in spring 1938 on a kindertransport; Kristallnacht; losing his job; and attending a Jewish trade school until it closed in 1939. He tells of his family's escape to the United States by way of Berlin, Madrid and Lisbon; his enlistment in the U.S. Army; training in England; transfer to France; assignment to United States military intelligence; and, from early 1945, uncovering former Nazi officers in Bamberg, Nuremberg, Erlangen, Dachau, Munich, Rosenheim, Salzburg and at Wolfgangsee. Mr. A. recounts visiting Dachau hours after liberation; visiting Frankfurt and Bockenheim in 1945 when he encountered acquaintances, neighbors and a former teacher; a 1989 trip to Frankfurt; and his reaction to a recent Philanthropin reunion in New York.
