Zoly Z. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Zoly Z., who was born in S?ieu Ma?gherus?, Romania in 1922. He recounts his father's death when he was four; he and his brother living with his future stepfather's mother in Aiud; their move to Bucharest in 1932 to join his mother and stepfather; increasing antisemitism as the Iron Guard gained power; his stepfather's emigration to Palestine in 1938; obtaining papers as a "volksdeutche" from a German lieutenant (who believed he was); socializing with the lieutenant; friendship with a policeman; threatened exposure as a Jew; obtaining a passport from the policeman; altering it so he could legally emigrate to Palestine; assistance from the Joint and the Jewish Agency; traveling to Constant?a in a group of 200; arriving in Palestine; living with his stepfather; joining the Haganah; serving in the Israel-Arab War; his brother's and mother's arrival; and emigration with his family to the United States in 1962. Mr. Z. discusses being compelled to visit a place where Jewish men and women (he recognized one) were mutilated and killed; his mother's and brother's experiences; his varied careers; and a recent trip to Romania to visit his father's grave. He shows documents.
