Rose A. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Rose A., who was born in Tver', Russia in 1921. She recounts her father establishing a successful business in ?o?dz?; a sheltered childhood; attending a private, Zionist-oriented school; her sister studying in Paris; traveling to Paris with her parents in June 1939 for an operation; successful surgical results in Bordeaux; her parents' return home; returning to Paris with her sister; the outbreak of war; returning to Bordeaux to obtain better medical care; supporting themselves; German invasion; their flight to Biarritz, then Bolle?ne; registering as Jews; her sister being protected from a round-up by a doctor in Orange; hiding on a farm with assistance from French locals; a French guard helping them travel to Perpignan; their arrest and imprisonment; transfer to Rivesaltes, then Gurs; attending an ORT school in Gurs; their release in April 1943 due to efforts of their landlady from Bolle?ne; hiding in several places with assistance from locals; liberation by United States troops; traveling to Marseille; marriage; and emigration to the United States. Mrs. A. notes many details of life in hiding; learning that her family had perished in Poland; and a recent visit with her husband and sister to their rescuers in France.
