Abstract

Videotape testimony of Trudy S., who was born in Pforzheim, Germany in 1924. She recalls a pleasant childhood; expulsion from school in 1938; seeing her father beaten on Kristallnacht; confiscation of his business; attending nursing school in Berlin in 1939; learning of her parents' and sister's deportation to France in 1940; and deportation to Jungfernhof, Latvia in December 1941. Mrs. S. recounts forced labor in the Ri?ga ghetto, Kaiserwald, Stutthof and other camps; meeting her future husband, who gave her extra food and arranged her transfer with him and his parents; a female guard from Pforzheim who recognized and protected her in Kaiserwald; separation from her future husband; transfer with his mother to several camps; liberation by Soviet troops during a death march; and the death of her future husband's mother. She describes working in Lauenburg (now Le?bork, Poland); returning to Berlin, then Stuttgart; learning her parents had perished but her sister had survived; marriage in Essen; and emigration to the United States in 1946. Mrs. S. discusses fears she developed when her children were born arising from memories of seeing so many children killed and the importance of being close to her children.
