Sol W. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Sol W., who was born in Chrzano?w, Poland in 1926. He describes his religious upbringing; antisemitic incidents; German invasion in September 1939; an unsuccessful attempt to flee with his family; forced labor; public executions; clandestine religious services; transfer with his brother David to Bobrek in 1941; slave labor in a coal mine; their transfer to Blechhammer in spring 1942; frequent hangings; assistance from David when he was critically ill; their transfer to Brande; eighteen months in a Sudetenland labor camp with improved conditions; their transfer to Langenbielau, then Faulbru?ck and Striegau; assistance from a German guard; separation from David upon transfer to Gross-Rosen in January 1945; evacuation to Leitmeritz; observing cannibalism; walking to Terezi?n at the end of April; assistance from the Red Cross; and liberation by Soviet troops. Mr. W. recounts walking to Raskov with his cousin; returning to Chrzano?w via Prague in May; reunion with David and his sister; traveling to Reichenbach; living in Marktredwitz; assistance from the Joint; reunion with their other brother; and emigration to the United States. He discusses the importance of being with David to his survival and his reluctance to discuss his experiences with anyone but David until recently.
