Abstract

Videotape testimony of Karla S., who was born in Vienna, Austria in 1912. She recalls rejection by a art teacher because she was Jewish; attending art school; working as a knitwear designer; emigration to Paris; marriage in 1937; weddings in both Paris and during a visit to Vienna (the last time she saw her family); her husband's detention as an enemy alien in September 1939; fleeing south with friends during the German invasion; staying in Branto?me; reunion with her husband in Angoule?me following his release; living and working in several towns including Branto?me, Pe?rigueux, Auriac, Chamboulive, and Condom; aid from local people and resistance members; finding hiding places and obtaining false papers; learning that her parents had been deported; her son's birth in January 1943; and difficulties arranging his circumcision. Mrs. S. tells of returning to Branto?me, then Paris, after the war; her daughter's birth in 1947; and emigration to the United States. She emphasizes the goodness of the French people to them.
